Psalm 55:22 Meaning

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22, KJV

What does Psalm 55:22 mean?

Psalm 55:22 is the Old Testament root of Peter's famous call to cast our cares on God. David, hunted and betrayed, preaches to his own soul what he most needs to believe.

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD.” The picture is of setting down a weight too heavy to carry and placing it on shoulders strong enough to bear it. David does not deny the burden is real; he redirects where it rests.

“And he shall sustain thee.” Sustain means to hold up, to keep from falling. The promise is not always that the burden is removed, but that we will be held steady under it — carried, even while we carry much.

“He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” To be moved here is to be toppled, shaken off our footing for good. God may let us be shaken, but not overthrown. Cast the weight on him, and stand.
