Philippians 4:6-7 Meaning
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
What does Philippians 4:6–7 mean?
Philippians 4:6–7 is perhaps the most practical passage in the Bible for an anxious mind. In the older English, “be careful for nothing” means “be anxious about nothing” — do not let worry take up residence.
But it does not stop at “don't worry,” which is rarely helpful on its own. It gives worry somewhere to go: “in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” The pattern is to turn each specific worry into a specific prayer — and to add thanksgiving, which quietly reminds the heart of what is already true.
The result is not necessarily that circumstances change, but that something guards you within them: “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding.” This is a peace that doesn't add up — a calm that outstrips your situation — and it “shall keep your hearts and minds,” like a garrison posted around them.
The next time worry rises, this verse gives you a place to take it. Name it to God, thank him for what you can, and let his peace do the guarding you cannot do yourself.
