Genesis 1:1 Meaning

Genesis 1:1 is the first sentence of the Bible, and everything that follows depends on it. In ten words it makes claims that shape how we see the entire universe and ourselves.

“In the beginning God.” Before anything existed, God already was. He is not part of the universe or produced by it; he stands before it as its source. The Bible does not argue for God's existence here — it simply begins with him.

“Created the heaven and the earth.” Everything that exists is made — brought into being by God, out of nothing, by his word. The world is not eternal or accidental; it is creation, and therefore it belongs to a Creator and carries his purpose.

If this verse is true, nothing is neutral. You live in a made world, as a made creature, under a Maker. That is either the most steadying fact imaginable or the most challenging — and the whole of Scripture unfolds from it.
