Micah 6:8 Meaning

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Micah 6:8, KJV

What does Micah 6:8 mean?

Micah 6:8 answers one of the oldest religious questions — what does God actually want from us? — and strips it down to three memorable things.

“Do justly.” To act with fairness and integrity, to treat people rightly and defend those who are wronged. God's people are to be just in their dealings, not merely religious in their words.

“And to love mercy.” Beyond doing justice, we are to love mercy — to delight in kindness, forgiveness, and compassion. Not just to show mercy when required, but to love it, to be the kind of person drawn toward grace.

“And to walk humbly with thy God.” The crown of the three: a life lived close to God in humility, aware of our need for him. Micah's point is that God prizes a just, merciful, humble life over any amount of outward religion. It is beautifully simple, and a lifetime's work.
