Ephesians 2:8-9 Meaning

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8–9, KJV

What does Ephesians 2:8–9 mean?

Ephesians 2:8-9 is the clearest statement in the New Testament that salvation is a gift, not a wage — and Paul goes out of his way to close every loophole we might use to take credit for it.

“By grace are ye saved through faith.” Grace is the cause; faith is the open hand that receives it. Grace is God's unearned favour, poured out toward people who could not earn it. Faith adds nothing to grace — it simply takes hold of what grace offers.

Then Paul removes our last handhold: “and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works.” Even the faith is not a contribution we bring to the table. From start to finish, salvation originates in God, so that no one can stand before him with a list of credentials.

“Lest any man should boast.” That is the point of making it all grace — it dismantles pride and levels everyone. Nobody earns their way in, which means nobody can look down on anyone else. We are all, equally, recipients of a gift.
