What does Lamentations 3:22–23 mean?
Lamentations 3:22-23 shines all the brighter for where it sits — in a book that mourns the destruction of Jerusalem. In the depths of grief, the writer suddenly remembers something that steadies him.
“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” Even in ruin, the fact that anything remains is credited to God's mercy. His compassions do not run out; they are the reason we are not utterly undone.
“They are new every morning.” This is the line the world has carried for centuries. God's mercies are not a fixed ration slowly depleting — they are renewed with each sunrise. Yesterday's failures do not use up today's supply.
“Great is thy faithfulness.” The conclusion is not about our steadiness but God's. In the middle of lament, the writer stakes everything on the reliability of God — mercies that arrive fresh every single morning.
