Colossians 3:2 Meaning
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
What does Colossians 3:2 mean?
Colossians 3:2 is about the direction of our attention — where we let our minds and hearts settle. Paul knows that what we dwell on shapes who we become.
“Set your affection on things above.” To set your affection is to deliberately fix your love and thoughts. “Things above” means the realm of Christ and his kingdom — eternal realities rather than only passing ones. It is a chosen orientation, not an accident.
“Not on things on the earth.” Paul is not forbidding ordinary life, but warning against letting earthly concerns become the whole of our focus. When temporary things fill the entire horizon, we lose perspective and peace.
The verse teaches a habit of lifting our eyes. Amid deadlines and worries, we consciously turn our minds toward Christ and what lasts. Where the mind makes its home determines much about our peace — so Paul says, make your home above.
