What does Proverbs 19:21 mean?

There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. Proverbs 19:21 sets our many plans beside God's one purpose, and tells us which one prevails.

We are full of devices — schemes, ideas, hopes, and back-up plans. There is nothing wrong with them, but the verse gently relativises them. However many plans we make, they are not the final word on our lives.

The counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. God's purpose is settled and unshakeable, and in the end it is his intention, not ours, that comes to pass. This is deeply steadying: when our plans collapse, his have not. We can hold our devices loosely because his counsel holds firm.
