Revelation 21:4 Meaning

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Revelation 21:4, KJV

What does Revelation 21:4 mean?

Revelation 21:4 is the Bible's last word on suffering, and it is read at more funerals than almost any other verse — because it promises an end to everything that breaks our hearts.

“God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” The image is tender and personal. Not merely that tears will stop, but that God himself will wipe them away, the way one comforts a weeping child, face to face.

“And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.” One by one, the great enemies are named and abolished. Death, grief, and pain — the whole catalogue of human hurt — are put permanently away.

“For the former things are passed away.” This is not wishful thinking but a promised future, secured by the God who sits on the throne. For those who grieve, it holds out a day when every loss is undone and every tear is answered.
