Psalm 119:105 Meaning

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105, KJV

What does Psalm 119:105 mean?

Psalm 119:105 gives us the Bible's own picture of how Scripture guides us — and it is more modest and more practical than we often expect.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet.” A lamp in the ancient world was a small oil light, enough to see the ground right in front of you. It does not floodlight the whole road; it shows the next step. God's word often gives us just enough light for the step at hand.

“And a light unto my path.” The light is for the path — the actual way we walk, our conduct and choices. Scripture is not given mainly to satisfy curiosity but to light the road of a life lived toward God.

There is grace in the smallness of a lamp. We often want the whole journey lit up in advance; God gives enough light to take the next faithful step, trusting him for the one after. Walk in the light you have, and more is given as you go.
