The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. Proverbs 11:25 captures a paradox at the heart of generosity: giving away enriches the giver.

The liberal soul is the open-handed, generous person. The old phrase made fat meant prospered, satisfied, flourishing — in a world where fatness signalled abundance rather than ill health. Generosity, the proverb says, comes back around.

The watering image is lovely: those who pour out refreshment on others find themselves refreshed. This is not a formula for getting rich by giving, but a spiritual reality — a generous life is a fuller life. What we cling to shrinks us; what we give tends to grow.
