2 Corinthians 12:9 Meaning

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9, KJV

What does 2 Corinthians 12:9 mean?

2 Corinthians 12:9 is God's answer to a prayer he chose not to grant the way Paul wanted. Paul begged three times for a “thorn in the flesh” to be removed; instead he received this — and found it was better.

“My grace is sufficient for thee.” God does not always remove the hardship, but he guarantees enough grace to carry us through it. Sufficient means it will not run short — however long the thorn stays, the grace outlasts it.

“For my strength is made perfect in weakness.” This overturns everything we assume. Our weakness is not the obstacle to God's power; it is the very place his power shows up most clearly. Where we are strong, we lean on ourselves; where we are weak, we lean on him.

So Paul lands somewhere surprising: “most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities.” Not resignation, but a strange joy — because the weaker he is, the more room there is for the strength of Christ to rest on him.
