John 14:1 Meaning — Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
What does John 14:1 mean?
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. Jesus spoke John 14:1 on the night before his death, to disciples about to have their world torn apart. It is comfort offered in the eye of the storm.
The command is gentle but real: let not your heart be troubled. Jesus does not deny there is cause for trouble; he offers something stronger than the trouble. And the antidote he names is trust — believe in God, believe also in me.
Anxiety often shrinks our view of God; faith enlarges it again. The rest of the chapter unfolds the reasons not to be troubled: a prepared place, a coming Saviour, a promised Spirit. When your heart is troubled, this verse points the way through — not to try harder to calm down, but to trust him more.
