John 14:27 Meaning
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
What does John 14:27 mean?
John 14:27 records some of Jesus' last words to his friends before the cross. Facing his own death, he gives them not advice but a gift: his peace.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you.” This is a bequest, like something handed down. And it is specifically his peace — the same steadiness he carried into Gethsemane and the trial, now given away to us.
“Not as the world giveth.” The world's peace depends on circumstances lining up — the diagnosis being clear, the money coming in, the conflict resolving. Jesus' peace does not wait for conditions; it holds even when nothing is resolved.
So he can say, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” It is not a demand to pretend everything is fine, but an invitation to rest in a peace that comes from him and cannot be taken by events.
