Joshua 1:9 Meaning
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
What does Joshua 1:9 mean?
Joshua 1:9 was spoken to a man stepping into an enormous task. Moses had died, and Joshua was to lead an entire nation into an unknown land. Into that fear, God speaks courage — and shows where it comes from.
“Be strong and of a good courage” is a command, which can sound impossible: you cannot simply decide to feel brave. But the command rests on a promise, and that changes everything: “for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Courage here is not the absence of fear or a matter of personality. It is the natural response to a certain fact — that God goes with you wherever you go. The presence of God is the ground the courage stands on.
Whatever you are stepping into today, this verse does not ask you to summon bravery from nowhere. It points you to the same promise Joshua had: you do not go alone.
