Psalm 34:18 Meaning
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
What does Psalm 34:18 mean?
Psalm 34:18 is a verse for the worst days. It does not explain suffering; it does something better — it tells you where God is in the middle of it.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.” Nigh means near. Far from being distant when we are shattered, God draws especially close to the broken-hearted. Your pain does not push him away; it draws him in.
“And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” A contrite spirit is one that is crushed, humbled, at the end of itself. These are not people God overlooks — they are precisely the ones he saves.
There is deep comfort in the direction of this verse. We often assume we must pull ourselves together before God will come near. The psalm says the opposite: it is in our brokenness that he is nearest of all.
