Romans 8:38-39 Meaning — Nothing Can Separate Us
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What does Romans 8:38–39 mean?
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8 ends with Paul auditing every force in the universe that might come between a believer and God's love — and finding all of them insufficient. The list is deliberately total: the worst enemies (death), the long grind (life), the supernatural (angels, principalities), time in both directions, space in both dimensions.
Then the catch-all: nor any other creature. Everything that is not God is a creature — which means nothing that exists can do the separating. The only one who could ever remove God's love from you is God, and he has staked his Son on never doing it.
Notice where the love is anchored: in Christ Jesus our Lord. Not in your consistency, mood, or performance — all of which fluctuate — but in a finished cross and a risen Lord. Paul is persuaded. Read the list until you are too.
