What does Romans 5:1 mean?

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1 announces one of the greatest results of the gospel: the war is over.

Justified means declared righteous — the verdict of a judge who counts us right with him, not because of our record but because of Christ's. And it comes by faith, received, not achieved. This is the great turning point of the Christian life.

The result is peace with God. Not merely a peaceful feeling, but an objective new relationship: the hostility caused by sin is ended, and we stand reconciled. Before we feel peace, we can know we have peace — a settled standing before God, secured through our Lord Jesus Christ.
