John 10:10 Meaning
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
What does John 10:10 mean?
John 10:10 draws a sharp line between two very different intentions toward you. Jesus, the good shepherd, contrasts himself with a thief — and the difference is life itself.
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” Whatever robs, deadens, and tears down in your life is working against you. Jesus names it plainly so we stop mistaking it for something harmless.
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Against the thief's three verbs, Jesus offers one gift in overflowing measure. Not merely existence, but life — full, deep, and abundant.
Note that abundant life is not defined here as ease or wealth. In context it is the life of a sheep safe with its shepherd: known, led, protected, provided for. The abundance is the security of belonging to him.
