Romans 10:9 Meaning
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
What does Romans 10:9 mean?
Romans 10:9 is often the first verse handed to someone asking, “What must I actually do to be a Christian?” Its answer is strikingly uncomplicated — two things, one outward and one inward.
The outward part is confession: “confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus.” To call Jesus “Lord” is to hand him the keys — to acknowledge him as the rightful ruler of your life, not merely a helpful teacher. It is a public allegiance, spoken aloud.
The inward part is belief: “believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead.” This is not vague optimism but trust anchored to a specific event — the resurrection. If God raised Jesus, then his death actually accomplished something, and his promises can be trusted.
Notice what is not on the list: a lifetime of good deeds, religious credentials, a perfect record. Salvation here rests on who Jesus is and what God did, received by faith. That is why Paul can make it so plain: “thou shalt be saved.”
