Proverbs 3:5-6 Meaning

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5–6, KJV

What does Proverbs 3:5–6 mean?

Proverbs 3:5–6 is the go-to verse for anyone facing a decision they cannot see through. It offers a simple, demanding, and freeing way to live.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart” calls for a whole-hearted reliance on God — not a hedged bet, but real weight placed on him. The counterpart, “lean not unto thine own understanding,” does not mean stop thinking. It means stop treating your own limited view as the final word. We simply cannot see enough to be our own compass.

“In all thy ways acknowledge him” means bringing God into everything, not just the crises — the ordinary choices as much as the large ones. And the promise that follows is quiet but sure: “he shall direct thy paths.” Guidance is the fruit of trust, not a reward for having it all figured out.

If you are at a crossroads, this verse does not hand you the answer. It hands you something better — permission to stop carrying the whole burden of getting it right, and a God who has promised to lead.
