Matthew 19:26 Meaning
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
What does Matthew 19:26 mean?
Matthew 19:26 is often quoted about achieving our goals, but its original setting is about something far weightier — salvation itself, and the limits of human effort.
The disciples had just asked, in astonishment, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus had said it was hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom, and they were stunned. If not the blessed and wealthy, who?
“With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” Jesus first agrees it is impossible — for us. No one saves themselves. Then he lifts their eyes: what is beyond human power is not beyond God's. Salvation is God's work, and therefore possible.
Read in context, the verse is less a promise that we can accomplish anything and more a promise that God can do what we cannot — including the greatest impossibility of all, rescuing sinners. That is where its hope truly lies.
