What does John 15:13 mean?

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 defines the highest form of love, and Jesus was about to demonstrate it in person.

Love, in this verse, is measured not by feeling but by sacrifice — and the ultimate sacrifice is laying down one's life. This is love with the volume turned all the way up: giving away the most valuable thing you have for the sake of another.

Jesus said it the night before the cross, where he would do exactly this. And he calls those he dies for his friends — not his servants or his debtors. To grasp this verse is to grasp the heart of the gospel: the greatest love that exists was poured out for you.
