John 8:12 Meaning — I Am the Light of the World

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12 is one of the great 'I am' sayings — an identity claim with a promise attached.

The setting sharpens it: Jesus likely spoke during the Feast of Tabernacles, when great lamps lit the temple courts in memory of the pillar of fire that led Israel through the wilderness. His claim: what that fire was to them, I am to the world — the guiding, sheltering light of God, in person.
