Proverbs 17:17 Meaning

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Proverbs 17:17, KJV

What does Proverbs 17:17 mean?

Proverbs 17:17 offers one of the Bible's simplest, truest tests of real friendship. It is measured not by good times but by constancy.

“A friend loveth at all times.” The key phrase is “at all times.” Fair-weather affection is easy; a true friend's love holds steady through the hard seasons as well as the happy ones. Constancy, not convenience, marks genuine friendship.

“And a brother is born for adversity.” The second line deepens the first. A brother — or a friend who becomes like family — is, as it were, made for the hard days. Adversity is precisely when such love proves itself and shows what it was for.

The proverb both describes the friends worth having and quietly calls us to be that kind of friend — the one who shows up in adversity, whose love does not depend on the weather. That is the friendship the Bible prizes.
