1 John 4:19 Meaning

We love him, because he first loved us.
1 John 4:19, KJV

What does 1 John 4:19 mean?

1 John 4:19 is only five words long, but it settles the whole direction of the Christian life. Everything we offer God is a response to something he did first.

“We love him, because he first loved us.” The order is everything. We do not generate love for God out of nowhere and hope he notices. His love came first — unprompted, undeserved — and ours is the echo of it.

This quietly frees us from a exhausting kind of religion, the sort that tries to work up feelings toward God to earn his attention. John says the current already flows the other way: God loved you before you loved him, before you knew him, before you wanted him.

It also explains where love for others comes from. A heart that has received love has something to give. We love because we were first loved — and that first love keeps refilling the well.
