Matthew 6:21 Meaning — Where Your Treasure Is

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:21 comes in Jesus' teaching about money and possessions, and it exposes a link we would often rather ignore.

Notice the direction. We might expect it to say our treasure follows our heart. Jesus says the reverse: our heart follows our treasure. Where we invest our money, time, and attention is where our affections will end up going.

This makes our spending a spiritual diagnosis and a spiritual tool. Want to know what you truly love? Look at where your treasure goes. Want to grow to love better things? Start investing in them. Lay up treasure in heaven, Jesus says just before, and your heart will follow it there.
