Psalm 1:1-3 Meaning — Like a Tree Planted by the Rivers
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
What does Psalm 1:1–3 mean?
Psalm 1 is the doorway to the whole Psalter, and it draws a sharp contrast between two ways to live. The blessed person is marked first by what they avoid — the counsel of the ungodly, the way of sinners, the seat of the scornful — and then by what they love.
Their delight is in the law of the LORD, and in it they meditate day and night. This is not grim duty but delight — a mind that keeps returning to God's word the way a tongue returns to a sweet taste. What we meditate on is what shapes us.
The result is the psalm's famous image: like a tree planted by the rivers of water, fruitful in season, its leaf unwithering. Roots sunk near the water source outlast the droughts. A life rooted in God's word is stable, fruitful, and quietly prospering, whatever the weather.
