Philippians 4:13 Meaning
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
What does Philippians 4:13 mean?
Philippians 4:13 turns up on locker-room walls and coffee mugs, usually read as a promise that faith can help you achieve anything. Its real meaning is quieter, and far more comforting.
Paul wrote these words from prison. In the verses just before, he explains what “all things” means to him: he has learned to be content whether he is full or hungry, whether he has plenty or nothing. The strength he is describing is not the power to win, but the power to endure — to remain steady and content in any circumstance.
The engine of that strength is “through Christ.” It is not self-belief; it is Christ's strength supplied to a weak and imprisoned man. The verse is not “I can do anything I set my mind to.” It is “I can face anything, because Christ carries me through it.”
For whatever you are facing today, that is the better promise: not that you will always succeed, but that you will never be left to cope on your own strength alone.
