2 Timothy 3:16 Meaning
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
What does 2 Timothy 3:16 mean?
2 Timothy 3:16 is the Bible's own statement about itself. Paul tells his young companion Timothy where Scripture comes from and what it is good for.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God.” The word behind “inspiration” means God-breathed. Scripture is not merely human reflection about God but words that carry his own breath — sourced in him, and therefore trustworthy in a way no other book is.
“And is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” Paul lists what it does: it teaches truth (doctrine), exposes error (reproof), sets us straight (correction), and trains us to live rightly (instruction). It is not decoration but equipment.
The next verse adds the goal — that we may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. The Bible is given not just to be admired or debated, but to form us. It is God's chosen tool to make his people whole and ready for the life he calls them to.
