2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV

What does 2 Corinthians 5:17 mean?

2 Corinthians 5:17 is a verse for anyone haunted by who they used to be. Paul announces that being joined to Christ is not a touch-up but a new beginning.

“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.” The phrase reaches back to the language of creation itself. This is not self-improvement; it is God making something new, the way he made light from darkness.

“Old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” Paul does not say the old was tidied up — he says it passed away. The record that once defined you no longer has the final word over your identity.

This is the ground of real change. You do not have to stay who you were, because in Christ you are already, by God's declaration, someone new. Growth then becomes a matter of living into what is already true.
