Psalm 103:1-2 Meaning — Bless the LORD, O My Soul
Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
What does Psalm 103:1–2 mean?
Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Psalm 103 begins with David talking to himself — or more precisely, to his own soul, calling it to worship. It is one of the Bible's clearest examples of preaching to yourself.
The second line adds a warning against a very human habit: and forget not all his benefits. We forget. Yesterday's answered prayer fades by this afternoon's worry. So David makes remembering a discipline, deliberately calling to mind what God has done.
The rest of the psalm lists those benefits — forgiveness, healing, redemption, crowning mercy. The lesson is simple and powerful: when your soul is downcast or forgetful, do not wait to feel grateful. Command your soul to bless the LORD, and remind it why.
