Ecclesiastes 3:1 Meaning

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
Ecclesiastes 3:1, KJV

What does Ecclesiastes 3:1 mean?

Ecclesiastes 3:1 introduces one of the most famous passages in the Bible — the litany of times to be born and to die, to weep and to laugh. Its opening line frames a whole philosophy of life under God.

“To every thing there is a season.” Life moves in seasons, not in one unbroken state. Nothing — neither the hard times nor the good — lasts forever. There is a rhythm to existence, and each season has its place.

“And a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Every purpose has its appointed time. This gently corrects our impatience and our despair alike: what is not happening now may have its season later, and what weighs on us now will, in time, give way.

The wisdom here is acceptance without fatalism. Because God orders the seasons, we can release our grip on controlling the timing of everything, trusting that there is a time for each thing — and a God who holds the calendar.
