Galatians 2:20 Meaning
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
What does Galatians 2:20 mean?
Galatians 2:20 is Paul's most personal summary of the Christian life. In one dense sentence he describes a self that has died and a new life lived by faith in Christ.
“I am crucified with Christ.” Paul speaks of his old self-reliant self as having died with Jesus on the cross. The life built on earning and self-effort is over; that is the starting point, not a distant goal.
“Nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” A paradox: he died, yet he lives — but the animating power is now Christ within him. The Christian life is not us trying harder but Christ living his life through us.
“The life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God.” Day to day, this new life runs on faith in the One “who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Personal, present-tense trust in a Christ who loved him individually — that is the engine of it all.
